Well, we were a bit disappointed that our mummifying apples have not changed as much as we thought. We had to revisit our hypotheses and make some adjustments. But, by Friday we noticed they were changing color and beginning to seriously rot. Our experiments this week will have more immediate effects. This week you can look forward to some food coloring fireworks.
Inquiry
Thinking Like a Scientist:
We will continue to revisit last week’s experiments, checking up on the mummifying apples, the corroding pennies and Gooney Plant Greene’s growth. But, this week we begin two new experiments where we combine liquids to find out what happens. Our goal this week is to improve our analysis skills. We will use our observations to reflect on our hypotheses. Was our hypothesis true or false? What conclusions can we draw from our observations?
Math
Place Value:
This week we begin a unit on place value, inquiring into how the same numeral can have a different value depending on which place it is in. We will examine how base ten helps us count and keep track of large numbers, and ponder where did this number system come from. To meet the needs of all students, we will be working with numbers in the 10’s, 100’s, thousands and perhaps even millions. Be ready for a challenge this week as we learn how to build and take apart large numbers.
Reading
Literacy Stations:
This week we begin our literacy stations, during which you will rotate between different centers. One station will be independent reading (a favorite), and in the other two stations we will be working on spelling patterns and sight words.
Writing
Finalizing Letters:
After writing our rough drafts last week, we are ready to add details to them during our revision sessions. We will learn some simple editing marks and hopefully begin our final drafts.
