Current Events

Every morning the Alta Vista community gathers for an assembly where one student presents a current event.  A current event is, "Something new to you."  So far this year we have heard about wild fires in Texas, a 21 foot long alligator, water on Mars and more.

We have learned a lot from watching our returning students present their Current Events.  Together we created a helpful list of how to best present a Current Event.

  1. Open the assembly by saying, "Good morning boys and girls."  The community will then respond with their own greeting, "Good morning (insert name here)."

  2. Introduce your Current Event with, "Today's Current Event is about..."

  3. Projecting your voice, clearly share the most important facts.  Bring some notes!  Try to keep the paper low; don't cover you mouth.  Show pictures if you have them, holding them up high for everyone to see.

  4. When you are done summarizing your news, turn to the audience and ask, "Are there any questions or comments?"  You will be responsible for calling on the hands that are raised and answering their questions to the best of your ability.

  5. At some point you will be asked, "What kind of news is this? Local, national or global."  Local news is happening in San Francisco.  National news is happening in the United States of America.  Global news is relevant to the whole world.

  6. When the assembly is finished, take your news article to Ed, who will put your Current Event up on the walls.
