Inquiry
Space:
Last week we opted to investigate the layers of the atmosphere as we begin our PongSat project, delaying our inquiry into the phases of the moon. Thus we start next week with an exploration into the relationship between the Moon, Earth and Sun. We will seek to better understand why a day and a year on Earth happens, as well as why the moon appears to change shape over time.
Math
Geometry – Congruence and Geometric Language:
This week we look at what makes shapes congruent. The Magical Minds will also play a new game in our Math Stations, which requires them to use their growing geometric language to guess shapes inside a mystery bag.
Reading
Retelling Stories:
This week we use our knowledge of story elements to clearly describe and retell the events in the stories we are reading. We will make Retelling Cubes, which will have engaging questions to inspire and drive meaningful reflections in our reading journals.
Writing
Writing Celebration:
On Friday we will host our second writing celebration to honor the work the Magical Minds have done on their medieval stories. This week we put the final touches on our stories, weaving medieval characters and era-appropriate conflicts (plague, high taxes, fire) into the plot.

On Wednesday the second grade will be going to Chabot Space & Science Center in Oakland. We have chartered a bus, and will be leaving promptly at 8:45am. Please BE ON TIME to school and bring a bagged lunch. You will want to cancel your Choice Lunch for Wednesday, and pack lunches in reusable/take-home containers (Chabot Space and Science Center is working hard to do “Zero Waste Lunch…trying to avert as much waste to the landfill as possible).
