It was incredible watching you collaborate last week as you built the natural borders to our medieval town. Paper towel tubes became a forest. Sheets of cardboard became the hill around the castle. A moat was made from a sheet of foam, and a stream cut from blue paper now winds through our village. The mountains to the south are rich with color and covered in boulders and snow. I can’t wait to see what happens as we begin to develop the urban landscape of our town this week.
Inquiry
Medieval Life:
Last week we began our work on our medieval town, shaping the natural borders with landforms and defining the landscape of the area with rivers, moats and wells. This week we explore the roles we have been assigned in the town, learning about our jobs and inquiring into the resources we need to be successful. You will have the opportunity to appeal to Lord Glenndelle for a plot of land, and if all goes well you will even be given the rights to build a home.
Math
Measurement - Length:
The week begins with a review of telling time as we learn two new games which will be added to our math stations. But, we will quickly delve into an investigation of length, measuring with a variety of units as we inquire into the difference between inches, centimeters, feet and yards. We will apply our measuring skills to the planning of our medieval homes, using inches to measure the perimeter of our homes.
Reading
Creating Mental Images:
We continue our investigation into creating mental images while reading, using sticky notes to keep track of our thinking and adding reflections in our reading journals.
Writing
Publishing and Medieval Stories:
You are doing a fantastic job publishing your stories, taking time to fix your mistakes and using your best handwriting. This week we will address the need for strong endings, revisiting our final sentences to add a little extra pizazz. We will also begin a new story that involves our characters from the medieval town, working to create realistic and descriptive settings in our stories.
