Last week we experimented with materials and designs to protect an egg from a 14-foot drop. Do you think if we had dropped our eggs from a lower height more of them would have survived? This week we apply our scientific thinking skills to advertisements, which paper towel really is the best? Are advertisers telling us the truth?
Inquiry
Thinking Like a Scientist:
Have you ever seen those Bounty commercials, “In lab tests, Bounty absorbs 20% as much as the bargain brand, and it’s more durable.” Have you ever wondered if this is really true? This week we apply our scientific thinking skills to investigate which paper towel absorbs more, and which one is more durable. What’s your hypothesis?
Math
Math Games:
Since school we have been busy learning games to add to our Math Stations, and this week we learn two more. One of our activities has you adding and subtracting money as you play a Monopoly-like game. The second will involve rounding numbers to crack a code.

Making Connections – Stop and Jot:
You are doing and excellent job making all sorts of connections: text-to-self, text-to-text and text-to-to world. This week we will talk about how to keep track of your thinking with small notes, stopping in the middle of reading to jot down ideas.
Writing
Character Development:
Last week we used graphic organizers to plan our writing projects, especially looking at how to plan for characters that come to life. This week we continue to look at writing characters. We will brainstorm descriptive language and discuss how to incorporate our ideas into our storied through drafting and revising.
