Rube Goldberg Contraptions:
This week we return to Rube Goldberg contraptions in preparation for June 8th’s presentations. In second grade, the Magical Minds will build 7-step contraptions that change in direction, change in elevation and incorporate simple machines. We will spend this week reviewing simple machines, creating rough plans and playing with simple combinations.
Math
Fractions:
The Magical Minds have explored fractions of a dozen and begun to recognize equivalent fractions for one half. This week we continue to investigate equivalent fractions for one quarter and one third. We will also expand our concept of a set and begin to look at fractions of group of people. For example, ‘what fraction of the class has a birthday in Spring?’
Writing
Breaking Down Stories and Publishing:
The Magical Minds are busy finalizing their last published writing piece for our last author’s chair of the year on June 1st. We are also developing stories to be later program into Scratch. The Magical Minds are focusing on breaking down stories into small, individual movements that can be translated into computer commands.
