This week we discovered the importance of writing and following clear instructions, especially when conducting scientific experiments. In Art Class, on Friday afternoon, we discovered that revising happens all the time. Whether we are changing an artistic design, scientific procedures, shopping lists or improving a letter to a friend, we are constantly revising and editing. This week your revision skills will be tested when you give an experiment to someone else! What will happen when they follow your instructions, exactly?
Inquiry
Thinking Like Scientists:
This week we have only one new experiment, Muffling Timers. Your job will be to carefully write (and revise) the steps to an experiment, which will be followed and tested by unnamed participants. Once the results of our experiment come back, we will focus our efforts on drawing logical conclusions.
Math
Place Value:
We continue to read and write numbers in various forms, exploring how the place of a digit impacts its value. We will compare our number system with Roman Numerals to see how other cultures represent numbers, as well as increase our appreciation for our base-ten system (thank goodness it’s not additive).
Reading
Reading is Thinking – Making Text-to-World Connections:
Having become masters at making text-to-self and text-to-text connections, we will work on making connections to the world around us. We also start a new read-aloud, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by the talented Kate DiCamillo.
Writing
Publishing Letters and Fresh Starts:
This week we send our letters out into the world! We will take our time to use best handwriting, carefully crafting our final letters. If you finish your letter, you will have time to plan your next story.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Field Trip to the Academy of Sciences:
On Tuesday, October 23rd, we will hop on a bus to the Academy of Sciences for a geologist’s field trip. We will visit the Earthquake exhibit, investigating topics such as the layers of the Earth, tectonic plates, fossils and of course, earthquakes. We will walk in pairs, taking turns carrying backpacks. Be sure to bring a disposable lunch AND snack (brown bag works great)! Wear comfortable shoes and layers (there is the possibility of rain). We will take public transportation - bus tickets will be provided.
LIBRARY RESCHEDULED to Wednesday!
Due to the field trip, library day has been moved. Please bring your library books on Wednesday.
No More Tickets Into Class:
Remind your parents not to fret! There are no more tickets into class. Focus your energy on doing your homework thoughtfully and independently.
Gardening Clothes on Thursday:
We are receiving a new pile of mulch this week. Expect to get dirty on Thursday!
Parent-Teacher Conferences:
There will be no school on Friday because your teachers will meet with your parents to talk about the wonderful things you are doing at school. Take time to read and play.
Sharing: In second grade we take turns sharing important events, significant objects, special guests and personal creations. This is one of the ways we honor each other’s diverse experiences, cultivate meaningful conversation and celebrate community.
