Can you believe it’s the fourth week of school already? Time flies when you are having fun. Just the other day Luci asked, “Who wants to stay the night at school? I don’t ever want to leave.” We are just having too much fun in second grade making sedimentary rocks in a bottle and creating our own classroom currency. This week you can look forward to growing crystals, getting paid in Magical Moola and learning new math games.
Inquiry
Geology Rocks!
Having familiarized ourselves with sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous rocks, you will have a chance to create your own model of how rocks change over time. We will investigate minerals, even taking time to make our crystals. Finally, we will inquire into what rocks can teach us about the past. You got it – we will explore the world of fossils.
Math
Magical Moola and Counting:
You have designed your own currency, how are you going to use it? This week we discuss the concepts of salary, fines and saving. To strengthen our counting skills, we will learn two or three new math games. We will make different combinations of coins to make a sum (eg. You can make 35 cents with a quarter and a dime, 7 nickels or even 2 dimes and 3 nickels) and practice counting by 25’s, 50’s and 100’s.
Reading
Choosing Books:
Many of you are eager to get into our classroom library and do some “book shopping.” But, how will you choose your next book? This week we inquire into what makes a ‘just right’ book for you. The next time you head to a bookstore, you will be even more empowered to pick a book that suits your interests and reading level.
Writing
Brainstorming:
Where do stories come from? This week we focus on the art of brainstorming. Before they sit down to write, most writers take time to collect their ideas. There are several strategies author’s use, and this week we explore story webs as well as character grids.
