Our Rube Goldberg Gala was a success! Each team successfully completed the task of ringing a bell. It’s such a simple task! And in true Rube Goldberg fashion, the second graders built several complex steps to complete the task. Check out our Rube Goldberg webpage for videos of their contraptions and witness the many failed attempts and the glorious successes.
Inquiry
Computer Programming:
The Magical Minds have begun to use Scratch to program a simple story that incorporates the facts they’ve learned while mapping their road trips across the US. But can they make a game out of it? This week the second graders implement “if…else” and “repeat until” language into their code to create a task for the gamer to complete.
PongSat:
Months ago we sent Ping-Pong balls into space filled with small items. We were wondering what would happen to the items we placed inside the Ping-Pong balls as they climbed higher and higher into the atmosphere. This week we find out. We will watch a film of the Ping-Pong balls rising into the atmosphere on the tail of a huge balloon, and then we will open the Ping-Pong balls and see if our hypotheses were correct.
Math
Graphing:
We finish off our year with an investigation into graphs. We will explore different types of graphs, inquiring into which types of graphs are better for different types of data.
Reading:
Making Inferences:
We continue to examine poems and books for clues that suggest a hidden meaning. The Magical Minds will use their powers of deduction to formulate logical conclusions about the author’s intended meaning.
Writing
Poetry:
The Magical Minds will write free-form poetry this week, pulling from their personal lives to create meaningful poems about life as a second grader. If we have time, we will also explore color poetry.
