It’s going to be another magical week in second grade. We can look forward to finishing our forest of family trees (did you notice the alliteration) and displaying it above our cubbies in the assembly room. You will also be excited to learn that we are starting our classroom jobs. Don’t forget to bring your geologists’ goggles (there’s that alliteration again!) because we will continue our inquiry into rocks. And (don’t freak out), we are going to make our own money. I can’t wait to spend another week with you!
Inquiry
Geology Rocks!
Last week you demonstrated excellent observation skills, and this week we focus on categorizing and sorting rocks based on our observations. We will discover the three main types of rocks (metamorphic, igneous and sedimentary), and learn how to identify them based on their properties. This investigation will also reveal how rocks are made, and we will begin to dig deeper into the question, “How do rocks change over time?”
Math
Magical Moola:
After a careful inquiry into US coins and bills, you will have the privilege to design and create your own classroom currency. It is important to know that Magical Moola will not be used as a toy. This is serious math! You will use your money to practice counting, multiply costs, predict savings, and much more.
Reading
Introducing Reader’s Workshop:
You will receive a reader’s journal this week where you will begin to document and reflect upon the books you read while you are in second grade. We will discuss what good/avid readers do and begin to practice procedures and routines for Reader’s Workshop.
Writing
Introducing Writer’s Workshop:
You will also receive a writer’s notebook this week where you will begin to collect ‘seeds for writing,’ which will later grow into stories, poems and nonfiction books.
CURRENT EVENTS (in reversed alphabetical order)
Current Events are presentations on events and things that are “new to you.” Please refer to the Inquiry webpage for a set of expectations and a list of kid-friendly news sources. Use the Current Event Planning Sheet to help you prepare a quality presentation.
