4/1 - 5
Our burgeoning biologists did an amazing job of presenting their research on rare animals last week. Their Nonfiction Big Books will be on display at the Fun-Raiser on April 6th. Several of our Magical Minds have also earned their first star in multiplication, having mastered their 1-5 times tables. Congratulations and keep up the masterful work!
Inquiry
Energy:
In the study of how energy moves, the Magical Minds are investigating waves. Using ropes, water waves, and slinkies the Magical Minds are discovering the difference between transverse and compression waves. While exploring compression waves, we will play with sound and pitch, digging deeper into the question of how frequency and pitch are connected.
Math
Multiplication:
The goal for the week is to begin multiplying two-digit numbers such as 23 x 4. We will begin by looking at patterns in multiplication and using what we know about repeated addition to solve simple two-digit multiplication. With a conceptual understanding under our belts, the Magical Minds will discover how to use the algorithm to solve these kinds of problems more quickly. Don’t forget we have Times Tables Tests on Wednesday and Friday. Practice, practice, practice!
Computer Programming
Scratch:
This week the Magical Minds will write their first code in the program Scratch. We will use what we know about the basic programming language to make sprites move across a scene and perform simple actions.
Social Studies
Changemakers:
Next week we delve into a new unit on people of significance. We will be looking at how historical figures have impacted our lives. We begin our investigation with the question of “who in your personal has made an impression or an impact on your life?”
Reading
Memoirs and biographies:
In connection with our Changemaker unit, we are investigating how people share their personal histories through the written word. We will also revisit our lessons on note taking as we begin to extract information from nonfiction texts on the path to writing our own biographies.
Writing
Spelling and Reference Tools:
This week we hunt through our own writing to find commonly misspelled words. During our literacy stations, the Magical Minds will use dictionaries to discover the accurate spelling, which they will then use to edit their writings.
