After a week of relaxation and time spent with family and friends, we return to the magical world of second grade. In the spirit of Thanksgiving, our theme for the 12th week of school is appreciation. What are you grateful for? How do you show you enjoy something?

Medieval Life:
This week we begin a four-week unit on life in the Middle Ages. We will work together to create a plan for a castle and its surrounding town. Each Magical Mind will be given a role of a townsperson while we investigate different jobs in a medieval town. Using books and the World Wide Web, we will inquire into the resources and people needed to run a medieval economy.
Key words: medieval, village, town, lord, peasant, economy, resource
Cartography:
This week we will also embark on a yearlong study of the US map. You will be going on an imaginary road trip from coast to coast, visiting a variety of states, cities and landmarks along the way.
Key words: map, cartography, key, landmark
Math
Measurement:
We hereby begin a unit on all things measureable. First we look at time. We will explore why we measure time, how we measure time and then tackle the skills needed to tell time with accuracy and precision. We will focus on telling time to the nearest minute and five-minutes, as well as develop a habit of adding a.m. and p.m. to our readings.
Key words: morning, afternoon, night, noon, hour, minute, second, measurement
Reading
Creating Mental Images:
Readers get more out of their books when they visualize the characters, settings and events that take place. The most important tool for creating mental images is your imagination, but you also need your schema. This week we look at how we can use what we already know, our prior knowledge, to create even more meaningful and memorable pictures in our minds.
Key words: image, mental, imagination, visualization
Writing
Editing and Revising:
In the next three weeks we will be working toward our first writing celebration, which will take place on Friday, December 14th. Thus, we will be putting a great deal of effort and time in revising, editing and publishing our stories.
Key words: revise, edit, publish
