Geology and Science Fair:
After delving into the rock cycle, it’s now time to investigate minerals. This week, we will explore mineral identification. We will experiment to discover what minerals are present in our growing classroom rock collection.
This week we also introduce the upcoming Science Fair (May 18th). The Magical Minds will develop testable questions, a hypothesis and begin a rough draft of a plan for their experiment. Details and expectations of the project will follow in an email to parents.
Geometry - Quilt Designs and Vocabulary:
Last week the Magical Minds explored how to create quilt designs using triangles, squares and rectangles. We are exploring sophisticated mathematical language, such as congruent, translation and reflection. This week we continue to investigate quilts, practicing and expanding our new vocabulary.
The Magical Minds are becoming masters at recognizing different genres. This week the second graders will develop signs for our classroom library.
Last week the Magical Minds investigated color poems and shape poems, and this week we continue to explore new forms of poetry. The second graders will also revisit their previously written poems, adding detail and descriptive language to bring their lines to life.
Computer Programming – An Introduction to Scratch
Abdur and Alexis have introduced us to a computer programming software called Scratch. This week we inquire into how computers work, breaking a sequence of events into small steps and developing commands.
