Geology – Earth’s Layers
This week in inquiry, we will explore the Earth's wondrous layers and discover how rocks form. We will investigate and experiment with igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks.
This week we begin a unit on shapes. We will classify shapes according to their characteristics, exploring both 2-D and 3-D shapes. The Magical Minds will use increasingly sophisticated language to describe and differentiate a variety of shapes. Over the next couple of weeks we will review area and perimeter, as well as tessellations.
We continue to investigate different genres. We will read books from different genres, talk about them with each other and create our own genre posters to explain to others how to tell which genre a book is.
This week the Magical Minds continue writing poems. They will use what they know about parts of speech to create dynamic poems. If we have time, we will also investigate haiku poems, counting syllables to write short poems.

Field Trip to Hidden Villa
Thanks to the generosity of the Fine family, we will be visiting Hidden Villa Farm in Los Altos on Thursday, April 26th. We will be driving to the farm in four separate vehicles, driven by second grade parents. We will leave school at 11am (right after snack) and be back in time for dismissal. Please help you child dress in comfortable clothing for traipsing around the farm. Wear layers! The farm is providing lunch, and we will provide snack. Just bring a smile and a willingness to have a good time.
