Inquiry

This week we begin a new unit on rocks.  As geologists, the Magical Minds will investigate the different properties of rocks.  We will learn about the three most common types of rocks, igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary and the geological processes that form them.

Math

This week we will create our own classroom currency.  We will use what we learned from our previous observations to design coins and bills that are both personal to our classroom, but also use similar symbols and topes. We will then use the currency to purchase items in the classroom.

Reading

We revisit the idea of genre, categorizing our favorite books.  We will look at characters, setting and plot to determine the type of books we have read.  The Magical Minds will also use their prior knowledge to determine the genre of new books.

Writing

The Magical Minds begin to look at poetry this week.  We will write our first pieces, as well as look at poems written by other second graders.
