Inquiry
It’s Written in the Stars – The Reason for the Seasons:
This week we take our paper mache Earths and explore the concepts of its axis and tilt. We will paint the continents on our Earth-like spheres and add a moon to model a lunar phase. Once we have established the angle of the Earth’s tilt, we will use our models to demonstrate why days are longer in the summer and shorter in the winter.
Math
Time:
We wrap up our unit on time with some final investigations into half and quarter hours and AM and PM. The Magical Minds will build fun clocks from our craft supplies. They will also evaluate the success of their sundials, checking to see if their creations accurately tell time.
Reading
Research:
The Magical Minds will begin their research projects. They will work on brainstorming research topics (about space) and using mind maps to keep track of their thinking. We will also continue to use nonfiction texts to find answers to our questions, keeping track of new learning by recording the title of the book, the fact we learned and the page number.
Writing
Final Books:
This week in Writer's Workshop we will transition from working on rough drafts to working on our final books. We will select which story we want to submit to the PBSGo Kids Writing contest and explain why we are most proud of that work.
