All About Energy – Sources of Energy?
Last week the Magical Minds investigated different forms of energy, identifying potential and kinetic energy. This week we look at sources of energy. We will use our water wheel to power a light bulb, launch rockets with compressed air and use plants to generate electricity. On Thursday we will also take a field trip to the Randall Museum to explore “Electricity, Magnetism and Electromagnets.”
Math
Multiplication – Building Automaticity:
We spend one more week playing multiplication games, using flashcards and practicing with friends to build automaticity.
Reading
Questioning and Wondering – Digging Deeper:
The Magical Minds are investigating the power of questioning before, during and after reading. This week we focus on why readers ask questions. We will look at how our wonderings can clarify meaning, determine an author’s style, focus our attention as well as help us make predictions.
Writing
Editing Stories:
This week in Writer’s Workshop, we will edit our own stories. Now that we’ve sprouted wonderful ideas, we will refine our writing to make our stories even richer! We will check that our compelling plots make sense, and we will use capital letters in the proper places.

Announcement
On Thursday, January 12th, the second graders are going to Randall Museum for an exhibit on electricity and magnets. Please send your child with a snack and packed lunch on Thursday. This also means you should not order Choice Lunch for January 12th. We will eat snack and lunch while we are out and about. The Magical Minds should also wear comfortable shoes (it's about a 40 minute walk to the museum) and layers in case of yucky weather.
