At Alta Vista School we have three non-negotiable rules: Be Kind, Be Respectful and Be Proud of your actions. Today, as a school, we focused on kindness. The day began with Casey running across the stage in her "kindness cape," sharing how she and others work hard to help spread joy through random acts of kindness.
Kindness is a difficult thing to explain and define. Unlike physical things which you can point at and describe, kindness must be experienced, explained and reflected upon. Thus, throughout the day we kept our eyes peeled for acts of kindness.
Below is one example of the Magical Minds showing kindness as they listen attentively to each other describe creations made with pattern blocks. Kindness is also the sound of the children oohing and awing over each other's designs, complimenting each other on their details and creativity. This is one awesome group of second graders!

One of my favorite moments in these first two days was when the Magical Minds created self portraits with icons of their interests and passions. As we passed the drawings around the circle, the room was filled with compliments as they pointed out interesting details in each other's drawings. Kindness is also the sound of the children asking thoughtful and relevant questions.
Keep your eyes peeled for acts of kindness outside of school.
Where and how do you see people being kind?
